CanvasWorkspace SVG Troubleshooting: Fix Common Problems

• CanvasWorkspace SVG troubleshooting • FCM transfer problems • ScanNCut SVG problems • ScanNCut troubleshooting • SVG not showing

When an SVG looks wrong in CanvasWorkspace, the cause is usually the file location, unsupported design features, incorrect scale, open or duplicate paths, or a transfer step that was not completed. Check the artwork in a simple order before changing cut settings.

Start here: extract the ZIP file, import the actual `.svg`, select all design parts, confirm the dimensions, inspect the Layer panel and cut paths, then export or transfer the project as FCM. Make a test cut only after the preview looks correct.

If you are new to the workflow, begin with how to use SVG files with Brother ScanNCut. You can also choose a clean design from our SVG bundle collection.

SVG will not open or does not appear

First confirm that you are importing the SVG itself. Digital downloads often arrive as ZIP archives, and the design must be extracted before normal use. On Windows, file extensions may be hidden, so check the file type in Properties if several files share the same name.

If the import completes but the canvas looks empty:

  • Select all objects and check whether the artwork is far outside the visible page.
  • Zoom to the selected objects or fit the page to the workspace.
  • Check whether the design imported extremely small or large.
  • Try a simple SVG to determine whether the issue is the software or one file.

SVG imports at the wrong size

Do not judge size only by how large the design looks on screen. Select the complete design and enter the required width or height while keeping the proportions linked. Confirm that every component is selected before resizing a layered design.

For projects with several colors, resize the assembled artwork first. Moving and resizing separate pieces independently can make alignment difficult later.

Pieces are missing, filled incorrectly, or disconnected

Complex masks, clipping paths, pattern fills, filters, and live text can display differently across design programs. A cut-ready SVG should rely on clean vector paths. If text is essential, the file creator should convert it to paths so it does not depend on an installed font.

Zoom in on suspicious areas and look for:

  • Open paths where a closed shape was expected
  • Tiny stray objects away from the main design
  • Overlapping shapes that create extra cut lines
  • Very thin details that are unsuitable for the chosen material
  • Objects hidden behind a large filled shape

The machine cuts the same line twice

Double cutting often points to duplicate paths placed directly on top of each other. Select the shape and inspect the object list or layers. Delete only the confirmed duplicate, then preview again. Do not compensate for duplicate geometry by changing blade pressure.

SVG looks correct but transfer fails

Brother's workflow sends machine-ready FCM data, not simply the editable SVG project. For wireless transfer, confirm that the machine is registered and connected through the supported setup. For a USB flash drive, export the FCM file to the drive and retrieve that saved data on the machine.

  • Save your editable work before transferring.
  • Use a simple file name without unusual symbols.
  • Check that the USB drive and file are recognized by your machine.
  • Retry with a small basic project to isolate a connection problem.
  • Follow the support page for your exact ScanNCut model.

The preview is fine but the cut is poor

Once the geometry is correct, move to physical setup. Smooth the material onto a suitable mat, confirm the blade and holder, and run a test cut. A torn corner or incomplete test shape is a better signal for material and blade adjustments than the full design.

Small text and intricate flourishes may need a larger finished size or a material that weeds more cleanly. Simplifying an overly detailed project can produce a better result than repeatedly increasing pressure.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my SVG show as one color?

The visual fill may not reflect how the final material layers will be assembled. Inspect the separate objects and paths. If all geometry has truly been merged, return to the original source file or use a properly layered SVG.

Should I trace an SVG in CanvasWorkspace?

Usually no. SVG is already vector artwork. Image Trace is useful for raster formats such as PNG or JPG; tracing an existing SVG can introduce unnecessary paths.

Should I save as SVG or FCM?

Keep SVG as a portable source design, use CWPRJ for editable CanvasWorkspace project information, and export or transfer FCM cutting data for the machine. Read SVG vs. FCM for ScanNCut for a quick comparison.

Reference: Brother Support lists SVG, FCM, CWPRJ, and DXF as CanvasWorkspace formats and documents FCM export and transfer methods. Interface details can differ by machine and software version.
