Most SVG digital downloads arrive as a ZIP file because one purchase may include several formats, sizes, previews, and license information. Cricut Design Space cannot use the design correctly while it is still inside that compressed folder.
Quick answer: download the ZIP file, extract all files to a normal folder, and then upload the SVG from the extracted folder. Keep the original ZIP as a backup.
If you need a new project, browse our SVG bundle collection. The steps below work for most digital craft downloads.
What is a ZIP file?
A ZIP file is a compressed package that holds multiple files. It makes a large digital bundle easier to download, but it is a container rather than the design you upload to your cutting software. Inside you may find SVG, PNG, DXF, EPS, PDF, or other files.
How to unzip SVG files on Windows
- Open File Explorer and go to the Downloads folder.
- Find the downloaded file ending in
.zip. - Right-click the ZIP and choose Extract All.
- Choose a destination folder and select Extract.
- Open the new extracted folder and locate the SVG file.
Do not drag one file from the ZIP preview into Design Space. Extracting everything first preserves the folder structure and makes it easier to find any instructions or license file.
How to unzip SVG files on Mac
- Open Finder and select Downloads.
- Double-click the ZIP file.
- macOS creates an extracted folder in the same location.
- Open that folder and choose the SVG for a layered cut project.
How to unzip files on iPhone or iPad
- Open the Files app and find the ZIP in Downloads.
- Tap the ZIP once to create an extracted folder.
- Open the folder and locate the file you need.
- Use the share or upload control in your craft app to select it.
On Android, open the Files app, select the ZIP, and choose the extract option available on your device. Menu wording can vary by phone manufacturer.
Which file should you upload?
- SVG: scalable paths and separate colors for cutting
- PNG: detailed raster artwork, often with transparency
- DXF: a vector alternative for software that does not accept SVG
- EPS: an editable vector source for compatible design software
- PDF: instructions, a color guide, or a printable reference

Why can I only see a browser icon?
Windows may associate SVG files with Edge, Chrome, or another browser. That browser icon does not mean the file is a webpage or the wrong format. Turn on file extensions in File Explorer and confirm that the filename ends in .svg, then upload it from inside Design Space rather than double-clicking it.
A simple folder system for digital downloads
Create one main folder named Digital Designs, then add subfolders by category such as Holidays, Shirts, Tumblers, and Gifts. Inside each design folder, keep the original ZIP and an Extracted folder. Add the purchase source or order date to the folder name when it helps you find the license later.
A practical filename might be floral-mom-quote-svg-original. Avoid renaming every included file until you know which formats belong together.
Common download problems
The ZIP file will not extract
Download it again and confirm the transfer completed. A zero-byte or partial file cannot be extracted. Also check that your device has enough free storage.
I cannot find the SVG
Search the extracted folder for *.svg or enable visible file extensions. Some systems display the SVG with a browser icon.
The SVG uploads blank or with missing parts
First confirm that you selected the extracted SVG rather than the ZIP or preview image. Then use our SVG upload troubleshooting checklist.
Can I delete the ZIP after extracting it?
You can, but keeping the original package gives you a clean backup. Store it locally or in your normal cloud backup and work from extracted copies.
